Festival

Lucerne Piano Festival 2023

The Lucerne Festival 2023 will take place in Lucerne, Switzerland in the spring of 2023 from 18 to 21 May. This will be a three-day Piano Festival curated by the pianist Igor Levit. The KKL Luzern, designed by Jean Nouvel and equally renowned for its acoustics and architecture, is Lucerne Festival’s central venue.

Programme
Johannes Brahms: Three Intermezzi for Piano, Op.117
Fred Hersch: Neue Songs Without Words
Fred Hersch: New Work
Gustav Mahler: Adagio from Symphony no. 10 (arr. for piano by R. Stevenson)
Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Sonata no. 7 in B flat major, Op.83
Overview

“Lullabies of my pains”: this is what Johannes Brahms called his three Intermezzi op. 117, which he published at the end of 1892, four and a half years before his death. They are reminiscent of soliloquies, evoke memories or perhaps even hint at a new era. In his solo recital, Igor Levit couples these intimate miniatures with brand new "Songs Without Words": a cycle of Songs Without Words written for him by the American Fred Hersch. Gustav Mahler was in a desolate state of mind when he created the Adagio of his Tenth Symphony, the last work he was able to complete: Mahler had found out about his wife Alma's affair with the architect Walter Gropius and felt abandoned by God and the world. The Adagio is a pain-torn farewell song; Igor Levit performs it in the piano transcription by Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson. And closes his recital with Sergei Prokofiev's Seventh Piano Sonata, which is marked by a global catastrophe: the Second World War. But Prokofiev responds to the impending downfall with self-assertion and an indomitable will to survive.
