Programme
Andrea Scartazzini: New work
Johannes Brahms: Clarinet sonata no.1 in F minor, Op.120 no.1
Luciano Berio: Symphony No. 4 in E minor op. 98
Overview

At the premiere of his fourth symphony in Meiningen on October 25, 1885, Brahms himself took the podium. It was to remain his last symphony. “The downright gripping trait of the whole, the density of the invention, the wonderfully intricate growth of the motifs, even more than the richness and beauty of individual passages, have fascinated me so much that I almost think the E minor is my favorite of the four symphonies," wrote Joseph Joachim, a musical companion for decades, to the composer "with great enthusiasm". The young Richard Strauss, who was present in Meiningen, was just as enthusiastic: "A huge work, new and original and yet a real Brahms from A to Z." Incidentally, Johannes Brahms met the clarinetist of the court orchestra, Richard Mühlfeld, in Meiningen. Although he actually wanted to give up composing, he wrote two new clarinet sonatas for him. "I wasn't in the mood to write a concerto for you," Brahms said jokingly. Well, jokes aside: Luciano Berio took on this task by rewriting the first sonata with piano accompaniment into a veritable clarinet concerto in 1986. The clarinetists know how to thank him.
