Anton Bruckner: Symphony no. 4 in E flat major, "Romantic", WAB 104
Overview

On its way of gradually acquiring the large-scale late-Romantic repertoire, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra sets a new focus with the symphonies of Anton Bruckner. Long gone are the days when controversies about his person and his work were the order of the day. When he was called "half a genius, half a fool" (the expression comes from Gustav Mahler) or smiled at as "musician of God". He was deeply religious, but his symphonies are not musical high masses, they stand for innovation and a departure into the 20th century: the first "modern", so to speak. Incidentally, when Bruckner bought a train ticket to Switzerland in Vienna on August 13, 1880, it was clear that the Rigi was also on the itinerary. He played the organ in Lucerne, crossed over to Vitznau on Lake Lucerne, and then the usual tourist program followed: ride on the cog railway, sunset in the evening, sunrise in the morning. “There was a bit of fog at sunrise. But at dawn after 6:30 it was completely clear,” Bruckner noted in his diary. The legendary long-distance view also seemed to please him: “You can see over low or crooked mountain peaks at other distant ones; the further away the others, the better; the same: the more slate." One could almost transfer this image to the monumental, repeatedly craggy architecture of his symphonies.

Two water canals frame the Lucerne Hall, a venue that is also unique in its adaptability and convertible for 200 up to 1,800 guests.
