Programme
Overview

Passion, lies, sex, and lots of jazz. We open our 2025/26 concert season at the KKL Luzern with the six-time Oscar-winning musical film "Chicago," whose illustrious star-studded cast includes Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, and John C. Reilly.

"Chicago" began as a sensational crime report in the 1920s, researched and prepared for the "Chicago Tribune" by US reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. Young women murdered their lovers, and despite all the evidence pointing against them, shrewd defense attorneys managed to secure acquittals – from all-male juries…

The story was subsequently adapted for the stage and made into a film – including one in 1942 with Ginger Rogers in the leading role. The musical's major success came in 1976 as a musical adaptation and in 1997 in a revival with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. In 2002, director Rob Marshall assembled a star-studded cast led by Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, and John C. Reilly and filmed the musical, which subsequently won six Oscars – including Best Picture and Best Actress (Zeta-Jones).

"Chicago" shines with crisp and spirited jazz from 1920s Chicago. Kander's songs are exuberant, dynamic, and rich with distinctive personality – from "And All That Jazz" and "Cell Block Tango" to "Razzle Dazzle" and "I Move On." Their authenticity to Chicago jazz in tone and timbre, especially through the use of wild brass instruments, is remarkable in every number.

The bittersweet, even dark humor in the lyrics adds to the enjoyment. Added to that is a score by Hollywood composer Danny Elfman, which blends seamlessly with the musical. Experience this masterful musical adaptation in new splendor.

While the film is shown on the big screen and the original vocals of the star ensemble resonate, the City Light Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Kevin Griffiths, plays the rhythmic, crisp score – with plenty of jazz, of course!

Film in English, with German subtitles.

Conventions
The outstanding Concert Hall with its multifunctional usage, is also an exciting possibility for conventions. Two water canals frame the Lucerne Hall, a venue that is also unique in its adaptability and convertible for 200 up to 1,800 guests. With its appropriate audiovisual facilities, variable height staging and mobile rostrum, all combined with the deliberately simple design of the hall, the organizer will find creative freedom to style the event.

The Auditorium for up to 271 listeners, too, is equipped with state-of-the-art congress installations and, like the Lucerne Hall, provides an attractive setting for conferences.
