The career of baritone José Antonio López includes performances in concert halls and festivals such as Konzerthaus and Osterklang Festival in Vienna, Berwaldhallen in Stockholm, the Warsaw Philharmonic and Theater an der Wien, where he gave a recital of works by Schubert accompanied by the pianist Maurizio Pollini.
He has also performed in major concert halls throughout Spain such as the Teatro Real and the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, as well as the Auditori of Barcelona, etc. His concert performances have included works such as Bach’s Passions and Mass in B minor, as well as Mozart’s great oratorios, works by Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms, and also Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Kindertotenlieder and Symphony of a Thousand, Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony and Schönberg’s Gurre-Lieder. He is soon to make his débuts in the Halle aux Grains in Toulouse, the Prinzregententheater in Munich and the Musikverein in Vienna
His operatic performances include the roles of Figaro (The Barber of Seville), Escamillo (Carmen by Bizet), Don Giovanni, Papageno, Figaro and Guglielmo (in Mozart’s operas), Uncle Salvador (La Vida Breve by de Falla), Der Tod (Der Keiser von Atlantis by Vicktor Ulmann), Malatesta (Don Pasquale by Donizetti ), Achilla (Giullio Cesare by Handel), Ned Keene (Peter Grimes by Britten), Tombatossals (La filla del Rei Barbut by Matilde Salvador), Mario (Una voce in off by Xavier Montsalvatge) and Noah (Noye’s Fludde by Britten). He recently made his debut in the role of Germont (La Traviata) in the Ópera de Oviedo, Lord Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Teatro Villamarta - Jerez, and Jokanaan (Salome) in Festival de Teatro Clásico de Mérida.
José Antonio López has performed with great maestros such as Álvaro Albiach, Gerd Albrecht, Josep Caballé, Edmon Colomer, José Ramón Encinar, Christopher Hoogwood, Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Virginia Martinez, Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, Salvador Mas, Juanjo Mena, Víctor Pablo Pérez, Maurizio Pollini and Josep Pons, among others.
He has studied the clarinet, piano, conducting and musical pedagogy and graduated in Singing from the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia where he was a student of Ana Luisa Chova. José Antonio López’s baritone repertoire covers various genres and historical periods including modern and contemporary music.
He has recorded Mozart’s Don Giovanni for Opus Arte, La verbena de la Paloma for Decca, Pepita Jiménez by Albéniz, Noye’s Fludde by Britten y Gurrelieder by Schönberg for the Deutsche Grammophon label.
