Overview

Awaken the lion to awaken the soul of the country, beat the drum to invigorate the spirit, China will rise, the sun and the moon will share the universe.

In May 1840, the warships of Western powers blocked the Pearl River Estuary in Guangzhou, and the first Opium War broke out. China gradually became a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, and the Chinese nation suffered unprecedented humiliation and suffering. In May 1841, after the forts in the north of Guangzhou were captured, the people of southern Guangdong demonstrated the bloody tenacity of the Chinese nation in their anti-British struggle in Sanyuanli, Guangzhou. The anti-British struggle in Sanyuanli was the first spontaneous struggle of the Chinese people against foreign colonial aggression in modern history. It demonstrated the courage of the Chinese people to fight against Western powers without fear of violence. It was the first glorious banner of the Chinese people's anti-aggression struggle in modern times. .

The dance drama "Awakening Lion" takes the Opium War more than a hundred years ago as the background of the story, and takes the Sanyuanli Anti-British Uprising as the climax. With today's lion awakening people looking back at their ancestors, they begin to review the history of a hundred years ago. Backtrace.

It has taken more than five years to conceive and plan the play. In 2016, the small dance drama "Awakening" won the gold medal in the Guangdong Province Lingnan Dance Competition. After more than a year of polishing and adjusting 13 drafts of the script, the creative team went to Sanyuanli Village, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Foshan Ancestral Temple and other places for in-depth interviews many times to fully understand Lingnan history and culture, traditional folk dance, lion dancing, Nan The essence of boxing.

The dance drama "Awakening·Lion" takes "Awakening" as the god, "lion" as the shape, and takes national awakening as the theme. It tells the story of the self-awakening and self-awakening of two young lion dancers when they face different life choices of love, hatred, family and country. Transformation reflects the indomitable spirit of struggle of the sons and daughters of southern Guangdong, shows the process of the Chinese nation awakening to resist and gain dignity and strength, and fully explains the Chinese nation's beautiful vision of "a century-old dream come true" on the road to rejuvenation.

Guangzhou Opera House is a Chinese opera house in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, People's Republic of China. Designed by Zaha Hadid, it opened on the 9th of May in 2010.

In April 2002 an international architectural competition attracted Coop Himmelb(l)au, Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid – each producing detailed designs. In November 2002, Zaha Hadid's "double pebble" was announced the winner and the groundbreaking ceremony was held early in 2005.

The theatre has become the biggest performing centre in southern China and is one of the three biggest theatres in the nation alongside Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts and Shanghai's Shanghai Grand Theatre. May 2010 saw American filmmaker Shahar Stroh direct the premiere production of the opera house: Puccini's opera Turandot which had in previous years been a controversial opera in China.

The structure was designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. It is conceived as two rocks washed away by the Pearl River. Its freestanding concrete auditorium set within an exposed granite and glass-clad steel frame took over five years to build, and was praised upon opening by architectural critic Jonathan Glancey in The Guardian, who called it "at once highly theatrical and insistently subtle."
