Gran Teatro de Córdoba

The Gran Teatro de Córdoba is a theater located in Córdoba (Spain), on Avenida del Gran Capitán, number 3.

Construction of the Gran Teatro de Córdoba, owned by Pedro López Morales, began in 1871. Work by the architect Amadeo Rodríguez, it was inaugurated on April 13, 1873 with the staging of the opera Martha, by Friedrich von Flotow, performed by Marimón company.

It had 403 patio seats, 24 stalls, 2 proscenium stalls, 28 main boxes, 2 main proscenium boxes, 8 second boxes, 2 second floor proscenium boxes, 99 amphitheater front seats, 105 paradise front seats, 200 main amphitheater entrances and 600 paradise entrances.

Until 1970, the year it was closed, it underwent various renovations that did not affect its initial structure. In 1976, the request for the demolition of the Great Theater was presented to the Córdoba City Council by its owners.\

In 1982, it was taken over by the Córdoba City Council after being declared a Historic-Artistic Asset, proceeding with its restoration carried out by the architect José Antonio Gómez Luengo between 1983 and 1986, and creating the Gran Teatro Municipal Public Foundation. It reopened its doors on March 19, 1986 with the XI National Flamenco Art Contest.

Since November 2004, the Gran Teatro Municipal Public Foundation was renamed the Gran Teatro Municipal Institute of Performing Arts due to the application of the Large Cities Law.

After its last internal remodeling, it maintains its original Italian theater structure with a horseshoe-shaped room and a somewhat more limited capacity than before: 946 seats distributed in stalls, stalls, box, amphitheater and paradise.
