Perceiving faith makes the soul full of life.
"Pathless" is choreographed and performed by Indian-British dancer Akash Audra and Chinese dancer Hu Chenyuan. This work carries the spiritual concepts of the two dancers, while integrating the millennium-long history, philosophy and culture of the two neighboring ancient civilizations of China and India, creating a new spiritual world.
"Pathless" was inspired by the many legendary monks who embarked on the long and arduous pilgrimage, and was eventually condensed into the 16th century classic Chinese story "Journey to the West". Their journey is both literal and metaphorical, both physical and spiritual. "Trailless Path" uses universal themes such as self-growth, strength, fear and love as a link to explore the individual's journey to find the true self. In the process of overcoming obstacles and facing demons, we leave behind many images of ourselves and learn to love these different versions of ourselves, while also discovering love for others.
Pathless is a fusion of modern dance, Chinese folk dance and the classical Indian dance form Kathak, merging epic mythological stories with personal experiences from two diametrically opposed global perspectives, presented in the form of a cultural exchange. Pathless traces a path between time and space, exploring the idea that if we let go of our attachments and embrace love and light, we may find a home for truth and peace.
The soundtrack of "No Path" was originally performed and sung live by musician Nicki Wells; Tina Tzoka created a highly visually impactful stage landscape; the lighting was provided by Asia Designed by Yaron Abulafia. The top-notch behind-the-scenes team makes "Trailless" touching and beautiful, making it a work of art that audiences can relate to. The work had its world premiere at the Asia TOPA Festival in Melbourne, Australia, on March 5, 2020.
Akash Audra and Hu Chenyuan are known as the most outstanding dancers in their respective native cultures. Aakash Audra has attracted global attention for his outstanding and exquisite Kathak dance performances, while Hu Chenyuan is an award-winning independent dancer and choreographer, and is regarded as one of China's top dancers. Yang Liping called it "a gifted soft body". Both dancers have a deep knowledge of their own cultural history and a deep understanding and respect for each other's cultures. In the exchange and collision of Eastern and Western art, extraordinary artistic experiences and philosophical thoughts burst out, bringing a refreshing new experience to the world.
"Pathless" is jointly commissioned by seven of the world's top institutions, including the Shanghai International Dance Center Theater, the Royal Ballet Theater in the UK, the National Theater of the Palais Chaillot in Paris, France, the Melbourne Arts Center in Australia, and the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in the United States. Produced by talented British dancer Akash Odry and Chinese young dance artist Hu Shenyuan.
