Leipzig Bach Fest 2023

The Bachfest 2023 will take place from 8 to 18 June. Johann Sebastian Bach’s next milestone birthday lies a little further in the future: in 2035, we will celebrate the anniversary of his 350th birthday … But before that we will celebrate the 300th anniversary of Bach’s appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas Church – in 2023!

Programme
Johann Sebastian Bach: Violin partita no. 2 in D minor, BWV1004: Chaconne
Camille Saint-Saëns: Piano concerto no. 2 in G minor, Op.22
Johann Sebastian Bach: Fantasia (Prelude) and Fugue in C Minor, BWV537
Johann Sebastian Bach: O Mensch, bewein dein large sin, BWV 622, arranged for string orchestra by Max Reger (1873–1916)
Gustav Mahler: Suite from orchestral works by Johann Sebastian Bach
Overview

"Bach is the beginning and end of all music" – Max Reger immortalized himself with this comprehensive and laconic sentence in a 1906 album. In fact, hardly any other baroque composer in the Romantic era experienced such a creative and varied reception as Johann Sebastian Bach. Under Andris Nelsons, the Gewandhaus Orchestra plays selected Bach arrangements by Joseph Joachim Raff, Edward Elgar, Max Reger and Gustav Mahler, in which the original melodies and harmonies are combined with the large symphonic orchestral apparatus. The program is supplemented by Camille Saint-Saëns' highly virtuoso Piano Concerto No. 2 with soloist Lang Lang.

Venue Info

Gewandhaus - Leipzig
Location   Augustusplatz 8

Gewandhaus is a concert hall in Leipzig, Germany, the home of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Today's hall is the third to bear this name; like the second, it is noted for its fine acoustics.

The first concert hall was constructed in 1781 by architect Johann Carl Friedrich Dauthe inside the Gewandhaus, a building used by cloth (garment) merchants.
The second Gewandhaus was designed by Martin Gropius. It opened on 11 December 1884, and had a main concert hall and a chamber music hall. It was destroyed in the fire-bombings of World War II between 1943 and 1944.
The third Gewandhaus on Augustusplatz opened on 8 October 1981, two hundred years after the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra moved into the original hall.
