Chetham`s at 50

From January to December 2019, we’ll be celebrating Chetham’s – its people, its stories, and its next fifty years.

About the Chetham`s at 50

In September 1969, a small musical revolution took place. A new intake of students was admitted to Chetham’s by musical audition, laying the foundations for a specialist music school in Manchester. Many of them, for the first time in 300 years, were girls.

Fifty years later, former Chetham’s students fill concert halls across the world – as performers, as influencers, and as audiences. Over half a century, that small revolution has rippled across the musical landscape, creating a step change in music education, accessibility and ideals.
