Beethovenfest Bonn 2019
‘Moonlight’: thus the motto of the 2019 Beethovenfest. What looks at first like a wry allusion to the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ turns out to be fruitful terrain for this year’s programme.
A musical perpetuum mobile is set in motion. Once it starts, it never stops. Two hours later it suddenly falls silent. Within this time span minuscule musical cells evolve into ever-new melodies and rhythms, perpetuating themselves and combining with other melodies only to vanish in the overall musical fabric. Five musicians move in space, and the sound sources mutate in a never-ending flux. The audience, whether sitting, lying or wandering about, drifts along in the stream of changing states. ‘Canto Ostinato’, the musical basis of ‘MOMENTUM’, was composed by the Dutch minimalist Simeon ten Holt from 1976 to 1979, the magnum opus of a remarkable and unique composer rarely heard in Germany.
