Overview

Continuing to bring new and innovative works to Denver, Colorado Ballet presents The Great Gatsby. Originally scheduled to appear at The Ellie in 2021 during the pandemic, this new ballet will make its long-anticipated premiere at Colorado Ballet, transporting you back to the Roaring Twenties through cinematic sets, an original score by Carl Davis, and dramatic choreography by Jorden Morris. Experience the decadence of history’s most carefree decade as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel unfolds through dance.

“The Great Gatsby”, choreographed by Jorden Morris, is a richly cinematic and emotionally driven narrative ballet that transforms F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel into an atmospheric stage work filled with glamour, longing, and tragedy. The production blends classical ballet vocabulary with jazz-inspired movement to evoke the spirit of the Roaring Twenties, capturing both the brilliance and the fragility of the Jazz Age.

The ballet centers on Jay Gatsby, the enigmatic self-made millionaire whose lavish parties conceal his singular obsession—his idealized love for Daisy Buchanan. Through expressive pas de deux, sharply stylized ensemble dances, and fluid musical transitions, Morris reveals the emotional undercurrents behind the glittering façade: unfulfilled desire, moral ambiguity, and the illusions that shape the American Dream.

Visually, the ballet is known for its art deco–inspired design, elegant costumes, and cinematic staging that seamlessly shifts between intimate encounters and grand social scenes. Gatsby’s glittering mansion parties, bustling New York nightlife, and the lonely spaces of his private world are portrayed through dynamic choreography and evocative lighting. These elements together build a vibrant yet fragile universe where the characters’ relationships unfold.

Musically, the production uses a hybrid score—orchestral textures blended with jazz and period-inspired music—to echo the 1920s atmosphere while supporting the ballet’s dramatic arcs. This gives the ballet a distinctive rhythm and tone, balancing nostalgia with emotional immediacy.

At the heart of the story is the tragic love triangle between Gatsby, Daisy, and her domineering husband Tom Buchanan, along with the looming presence of the Wilsons and the destructive consequences of deception, desire, and social expectations. Morris’s choreography emphasizes the contrast between fantasy and reality, showing how Gatsby’s dream, built on memories and illusions, inevitably collapses.

Through its vivid choreography, evocative design, and powerful storytelling, Jorden Morris’s “The Great Gatsby” stands as one of the most compelling modern narrative ballets. It brings a beloved literary classic to life with emotional depth, visual elegance, and a captivating blend of classical and contemporary dance.

Synopsis

Act I
Nick Carraway arrives in West Egg and becomes a neighbor to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, whose mansion hosts dazzling parties filled with music, dancers, and glittering guests. Despite the constant festivities, Gatsby remains distant and focused on a singular dream.
Nick visits his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom, sensing tension beneath their elegant lifestyle. Gatsby secretly asks Nick for help in arranging a meeting with Daisy — the woman he once loved and has spent years trying to win back.
When Gatsby and Daisy finally reunite, their joy reignites, and a romance begins to blossom. Yet the world around them bristles with jealousy, secrets, and unspoken truths.

Act II
Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship deepens, but their happiness is fragile. Tom grows increasingly suspicious and confrontational, while Daisy struggles between her past with Gatsby and her obligations to her current life.
During a heated confrontation in New York, Gatsby’s carefully built dream begins to crumble. Daisy, emotional and overwhelmed, accidentally strikes Tom’s mistress, Myrtle Wilson, with Gatsby’s car.
In the aftermath, blame, grief, and confusion spiral out of control. Myrtle’s husband, George Wilson, consumed by sorrow and misled by Tom, seeks revenge and kills Gatsby before taking his own life.
Nick, devastated by the tragedy, reflects on the illusions, desires, and hollow promises that shaped the world around Gatsby. As the lights fade, the dream dissolves, leaving only the echo of a man who believed he could recreate the past.
