Overview

ABT@85: Classics to the Contemporary is a special program by American Ballet Theatre celebrating its 85th anniversary. The performance highlights the company’s rich legacy, bringing together timeless classical ballets and innovative contemporary works, showcasing the range and artistry of ABT’s dancers.

The Kingdom of the Shades

The Kingdom of the Shades, from the full-length ballet La Bayadère, offers a shining moment not just for the Principal Dancers and Soloists but for the female corps de ballet who open this fabled ballet passage with an astonishing sequence of pure classicism and precision. A masterpiece of choreographic synchronicity, the rigor, focus, and artistry required of ABT’s dancers to move and breathe as one is nothing short of extraordinary.

Le Grand Pas de Deux

Le Grand Pas de Deux is a witty and playful parody of classical ballet’s grand pas de deux tradition. With exaggerated poses, humorous timing, and cheeky interactions, the piece turns ballet’s formal conventions on their head. It is a clever and lighthearted celebration of technique and theatricality, full of charm and unexpected surprises.

Known By Heart

Power-packed and aerobically demanding, this duet from Known by Heart reimagines the classical pas de deux with a fresh intensity and unexpected depth. Tharp forges a fierce, witty, and dynamic relationship between the dancers, blending technical rigor with playful interaction. The choreography pushes both performers to their physical and expressive limits, revealing a partnership that is as electrifying as it is nuanced.

The Sleeping BeautyAct III

Act III of The Sleeping Beauty unfolds as a lavish celebration of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré’s wedding. The royal court comes alive with spirited dances by cherished fairy tale friends, such as the Bluebird and Red Riding Hood. Central to the act is the couple’s pas de deux, showcasing the exquisite partnership between the Prince and Princess. With its timeless choreography and Tchaikovsky’s rich score, this piece delivers a joyous and magical conclusion to the beloved fairy tale.

Venue Info

New York City Ballet (David H. Koch Theater) - New York
Location   20 Lincoln Center Plaza

The David H. Koch Theater is the major theater for ballet, modern, and other forms of dance, part of the Lincoln Center, at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and 63rd Street in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Originally named the New York State Theater, the venue has been home to the New York City Ballet since its opening in 1964, the secondary venue for the American Ballet Theatre in the fall, and served as home to the New York City Opera from 1964 to 2011.

The New York State Theater was built with funds from the State of New York as part of New York State's cultural participation in the 1964–1965 World's Fair. The theater was designed by architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee, and opened on April 23, 1964. After the Fair, the State transferred ownership of the theater to the City of New York.

Along with the opera and ballet companies, another early tenant of the theater was the now defunct Music Theater of Lincoln Center whose president was composer Richard Rodgers. In the mid-1960s, the company produced fully staged revivals of classic Broadway musicals. These included The King and I; Carousel (with original star, John Raitt); Annie Get Your Gun (revised in 1966 by Irving Berlin for its original star, Ethel Merman); Show Boat; and South Pacific.

The theater seats 2,586 and features broad seating on the orchestra level, four main “Rings” (balconies), and a small Fifth Ring, faced with jewel-like lights and a large spherical chandelier in the center of the gold latticed ceiling.

The lobby areas of the theater feature many works of modern art, including pieces by Jasper Johns, Lee Bontecou, and Reuben Nakian.
