With funky sounds and blood-pumping pop rhythms, Vince Mendoza and the WDR Big Band present highlights from the diverse oeuvre of music icon Prince.
Prince – he was one of the greats of music. Funk, soul, R&B, rock and pop music would not be what they are today without him. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and passing away far too soon in 2016 at the age of 58, the artist who had such a lasting impact on the music world, from the late 1970s until his death, left behind plenty of great songs. World hits like Purple Rain or Nothing Compares 2 U, as well as lesser-known songs like The Everlasting Now or 1999 – to name a few – will be played by the WDR Big Band for your enjoyment. Part of the star cast of this unique project are former members of the Prince Band as well as early companions of the exceptional artist.
The WDR Big Band is a unique orchestra whose history as a radio orchestra goes back to the 1940s. A world-class jazz orchestra, their productions have won multiple Grammy® awards. The 17 members of the Big Band are soloists with an unmistakeable style who inspire people with their joy of playing, skill and an superb sound, which they are constantly developing through exciting collaborations with jazz greats and pop stars. The U.S. jazz musician, composer and arranger Vince Mendoza has been associated with the WDR Big Band for decades and has been shaping its musical work as Composer in Residence since 2016.
