About
Collegium 1704 is a Czech Ensemble specializing in performances of old music in historical performance practice.
The orchestra was founded in 1991 by the harpsichordist Václav Luks (* 1970). The nearly 20-member mixed choir, Collegium vocale 1704 were founded in 2005 within the framework of the project, music bridge Prague-Dresden. He completes the purely instrumental Collegium 1704 and also enables the performance of large vocal works, thereby redefining the Repertoire of the ensemble. Václav Luks is also head of the overall ensemble.
The Baroque Repertoire together with the historically informed performance practice determines the composition: in addition to the usual string instruments with 1st and 2nd violins, viols, Violoncelli, the woodwind (traversing flute, recorder, oboe, bassoon) - and brass (natural trumpets and horns) as well as timpani occurs the general bass (harpsichord or organ positive, Cello or Gambe, Theorbe, Bass). Some compositions only require a part of this complete composition.
The main focus of the performance programme is the vowel works passions (Matthew Passion BWV 244, Johann passion BWV 245) and motets Johann Sebastian Bach; oratorios (Messiah HWV 56) and operas (Rinaldo HWV 7) Georg Friedrich Händels were on the schedule several times. Another major focus is on the Œuvre of the Czech Baroque composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. The Ensemble performed at the Prague Spring Music Festivals, Festival de Sablé in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, Festival De La Chaise-Dieu, Festival de Musique de Sully & du Loiret and music festival Saint Wenzel in Ostrava (as Artists in Residence). In addition, the concert series "music bridge Prague-Dresden" to a focus of activity in the Ensembles, regular concerts in the two cities forms are reminiscent of the common music tradition of the local Courts.
2015 was the Collegium 1704 Ensemble in residence at Bachfest Leipzig.
