After Feng's childhood love Li Zhaoting is wrongly imprisoned, she disguises herself as a man and travels to the capital to save him. When seeking help fails, she takes the imperial examination under another person's name, earns the top rank and is unexpectedly chosen as the royal prince consort. On the wedding night, she reveals the truth to the princess, who is moved by her sincerity. The emperor eventually pardons Li Zhaoting and unites the lovers, while a second match brings the story to two marriages.
