Overview

The ballet of the Sofia Opera presents the famous work “Carmen-Suite”, written by the composer Rodion Schedrin – a marvellous interpretation of Georges Bizet’s music of genius.

The ballet “Carmen-Suite” was created specially for the great Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, choreographer and stage director is Alberto Alonso, and its premiere was at the Bolshoi Theatre in April 1967. More than forty years ago, this spectacle was shown also on the Sofia stage, at the guest-performance of the National Ballet of Cuba. In the role of Carmen incorporated herself another great ballerina – Alicia Alonso.

What is the story of this ballet work?
One evening the National Ballet of Cuba was on a guest-performance in Moscow. When she saw the performance of “El salar” by Alberto Alonso, Maya Plisetskaya understood right away that this was the choreographer, able to stage “Carmen” in a different, untraditional way, escaping from the mawkish pseudo Spanish style of the ballet classic.

She found herself behind the curtain, eager to meet the Maestro. She saw Alberto and turned directly to him with the words: “Would you like to make “Carmen”? For me.” He exclaimed: “How did you read my thoughts? This is my dream!” About Maya Plisetskaya Alberto Alonso said that she was the 100 percent Carmen – a real personification of rebelliousness and irreconcilability. Maya Plisetskaya herself in not one or two interviews shared that for her it was the role of her life; something more – in it she input a political message: the character is a symbol of the free personality, leading a fatal fight with the authorities of that time. Not less difficult than the fight with the Soviet culture bearers was the search of music. After the refusal by Shostakovich and Khachaturian, the composer Rodion Schedrin (Maya Plisetskaya‘с husband) created the orchestration, inspired by the rehearsals.

This way Mérimée‘s moving plot and the depth of feelings in Bizet’s opera acquired a philosophical touch in the ballet-suite. “Carmen” is an amazing quintessence of passionate emotions and strong characters, expressed through the content of the short novel and the music by the composers.

History
Premiere of this production: 20 April 1967, The Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow

Carmen Suite is a one-act ballet created in 1967 by Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso to music by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin for his wife, prima ballerina assoluta Maya Plisetskaya.

Synopsis
  • Place: Seville, Spain, and surrounding hills
  • Time: Around 1820

Alonso's scenario centers on Carmen, Don José and the bullfighter Escamillo. Carmen is a passionate, free-spirited woman in contrast to the temperamental and fickle Don José. Fate, a ballerina dressed in black and a representation of Carmen's alter ego, tells Carmen's fortune with a deck of cards. A fight with tobacco dealers leads to Carmen's arrest by Captain Zúñiga. In jail, she seduces Don José and convinces him to release her. Carmen is subsequently caught in a love triangle between Don José and popular bullfighter Escamillo.

Boris Messerer's sets included a mock bullring which symbolizes life, uniting the bullfight and Carmen's destiny in a sinister personage. Masked spectators and a uniformed judge represent society's disapproval for the unconventional behavior of Carmen and her lovers. Fate reappears in the final act playing the role of a bull and the three main characters meet in the arena. Carmen dances alternatively with Fate, Escamillo and Don José until she is stabbed. She dies caressing Don José's face, revealing him as the assassin.

The National Opera and Ballet is a national cultural institution in Bulgaria that covers opera and ballet. It is based in an imposing building in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The first opera company in Bulgaria was founded in 1890 as part of the Capital Opera and Drama Company. The two sections split in 1891 to form the Salza i Smyah theatrical company and the Capital Bulgarian Opera. It was, however, disbanded the next year due to lack of government funding and financial difficulties.

The Bulgarian Opera Society was established in 1908 and staged its first test performance. The first full opera was performed in 1909 — Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. The first Bulgarian opera works were also presented in the period, including Siromahkinya by Emanuil Manolov, Kamen i Tsena by Ivan Ivanov and Václav Kaucký, Borislav by Georgi Atanasov and Tahir Begovitsa by Dimitar Hadzhigeorgiev.

As the company evolved under the ensemble system and style, the permanent troupe of soloists, choir, orchestra, ballet, technical and production teams produced up to 10 opera and ballet premieres a year, in addition to concert programs. Gradually, the basic repertory of world opera classics was established at the same time as the theatre began to attract Bulgarian composers who created new national works. 20th Century performers such as Nicolai Ghiaurov, Nicola Ghiuselev, and Ghena Dimitrova began their careers within the structure of the National Opera, as did later singers such as Irena Petkova and Kiril Manolov.

The institution became a national one in 1922 and changed its name to National Opera. A ballet company was established and gave its first performance in 1928. The opera ceased its activity for a while after the 1944 bombing of Sofia, but was restored shortly afterward with a significant increase of government funding.

The National Opera and Ballet's building was designed in 1921 and built for the most part between 1947 and its opening in 1953.

In 2000, the company co-organized the Boris Christoff Twelfth International Competition for Young Opera Singers with the idea of attracting a younger audience and supporting young and upcoming singers.

The repertoire historically tended to favour the Italian and French repertoire with little Wagnerian tradition, although since 2010, the artistic director of the opera company Plamen Kartaloff began a Ring Cycle with entirely Bulgarian casts. Following the entry of Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde into the repertoire, the complete cycle was performed both in Moscow and Sofia during 2018.
