About

British bass Brindley Sherratt made his Royal Opera debut in 2001 as Plutone (L’anima del filosofo) and has since sung many roles for the Company, including Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Ramfis (Aida), Narbal (Les Troyens), Oroveso (Norma) and Timur (Turandot). He returns in the 2018/19 Season to sing Fafner (Der Ring des Nibelungen) and John Claggart (Billy Budd).

Sherratt was born in Lancashire and studied trumpet and singing at the Royal Academy of Music. He began his career in the BBC Singers, later moving into opera. He has a long association with English National Opera, where his roles have included Sarastro, Prince Gremin, Pimen (Boris Godunov) and Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra). His wide repertory includes King Marke (Tristan und Isolde), Veit Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Daland (Der fliegende Holländer), Fasolt (Das Rheingold), John Claggart (Billy Budd), Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier), Arkel (Pélleas et Mélisande), Rocco (Fidelio), Philip II (Don Carlos) and Banco (Macbeth). He appears regularly with companies around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Chicago Lyric Opera, the Hamburg and Vienna State Operas, Opernhaus Zürich, Netherlands Opera and the Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg festivals.

Sherratt is also a keen concert performer, and appears widely with leading orchestras and period instrument ensembles under such conductors as Mark Elder, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniel Harding, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Antonio Pappano. He is a Visiting Professor and Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music.
