About
The Berliner Baroque Soloists were founded in 1995 by Rainer Kussmaul, Raimar Orlovsky, other members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and leading musicians of the old music scene with the aim of performing the music of the 17th and 18th century with modern instruments at the highest artistic level.
The conscious decision to play on modern or modernized old instruments is in no way contrary to the approach to a "historical"performance practice. The nature and size of the cast vary with respect to the works of the respective concert programs.
With Rainer Kussmaul (1946-2017), the Ensemble has had an internationally experienced soloist as artistic director since its foundation up to the year 2010.
Since 2010, the Berliner Baroque Soloists have placed the artistic direction from project to project in different hands: Bernhard Forck, Daniel Gaede, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Gottfried von der Goltz, Daniel Hope, Daishin Kashimoto and Daniel Sepec have already performed at the top of the ensemble.
One focus is on the commitment to wrongly forgotten works – in particular Georg Phillip Telemanns-as well as compositions of unknown Old Masters.
Among the guests of the ensemble were as well-known singers such as Christine Schäfer, Anna Prohaska, Dorothea Röschmann, Christiane Oelze, Sandrine Piau, Sybilla Rubens, Bernarda Fink, Genia Kühmeier, Thomas Quasthoff, Mark Padmore and Michael Schade; brass soloists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Jacques Zoon, Albrecht Mayer, Jonathan Kelly, Maurice Steger, Michala Petri, Radek Baborak and Reinhold Friedrich the harpsichords/pianists Andreas Staier, Christine schornsheim and Kristjan Bezuidenhout as well as the "centennial violinist" Frank Peter Zimmermann.
Christian Ehring (today's show) and the actors Burghard Klaussner and Armin Müller-Stahl acted as moderators or speakers.
In December 2014, the Baroque Soloists performed for the first time under the direction of a conductor: at the end of the Cphe Bach year, symphonies and concerts were performed under the direction of Reinhard Goebel in the Great Hall of the Berliner Philharmonie. The concert was recorded by SONY and appeared in November 2015 as a "live CD", which was highly praised by the trade press.
In the autumn of 2017, the six Brandenburg concerts of JS Bach under the direction of Reinhard Goebel and with the participation of renowned soloists such as Reinhold Friedrich, Jacques Zoon, Radek Baborak and Nils Mönkemeyer, also appeared at SONY classics, were added as Studio production.
The specialist press and the international audience received this new production of the "Brandenburg" so exuberantly, that the Baroque Soloists appointed Reinhard Goebel as their new artistic director following a fulminate European Tour in May 2018.
In October 2018 Reinhard Goebel and the Baroque Soloists were awarded the" recording of the year "for the Brandenburg concerts with the newly created" Opus-Klassik-Preis 2018".
The work of the ensemble is documented by numerous CD recordings, whose extraordinary qualities were also recognized by the critics. For example, the Berliner Baroque Soloists received numerous awards for their recording, including the Grammy Award in 2005.
The Ensemble collaborated with all major Labels (EMI, Deutsche Grammophon, SONY), in the recent past there was also a cooperation with the Swabian label Hänssler-classics.
