Overview

In the new version of the play, the director relies primarily on the musical material of the operetta. The music of the Merry Widow is extraordinarily beautiful, melodically generous, its figurative and intonational sphere is noble, subtle, deeply lyrical and melodious. At the same time, other, diverse musical layers are included in the musical fabric of the operetta: salon music and cabaret music are side by side with Montenegrin folk motifs here.

Hungarian composer, outstanding master of the Viennese operetta F. Legard wrote: "My goal is to ennoble operetta. The viewer should worry, and not watch and listen to outright nonsense." Studying the laws of the genre and the requirements of his time, the composer was looking for new life situations in the dramaturgy of the play. Abandoning the conventionally historical performance with its colorful scenery and costumes, the theatricality of the positions, he brought the operetta closer to the life, the spiritual world of his contemporaries, causing listeners to feel a sense of belonging to the events taking place on stage. Lyrically intimate plots, tending to musical melodrama, drama saturated with action, requiring high acting skills, combined with bright melodism and modern rhythms have always attracted the audience in F.'s operettas.Legara.

The creative team of the Musical Theater decided to turn again to one of the best operettas by F. Legara – "The Merry Widow", to offer the audience her new stage version. The last time this operetta was staged in the theater in 1995 by director M. Dotlibov and was timed to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the composer's birth and the 90th anniversary of the premiere of the play at the Vienna theater An der Wynn.
