Overview

The action takes place on the border of Hungary and Romania in Temeshvar at the end of the XVIII century.
Due to friendly ties with foreigners, Baron Barinkai was expelled from his land. 20 years later, at the insistence of the new governor, Count Omonai, Baron Barinkai's son Sandor returns to his native land and finds his father's castle in ruins. The new owner of the land — Koloman Zupan — meets the son of the former owner of the estate without much joy. He categorically does not want to part with his property and five thousand pigs, which have become his pride and glorified his name. In addition, the pig farmer is very concerned about the presence of a gypsy camp, which, according to a long tradition, is located on the territory of the Barinkaev castle. At the same time, his thoughts are occupied with the upcoming matchmaking of the royal judge Cornero to his daughter Arsene, who is in love with the poor guy Ottokar and intends to marry only her lover.
The appearance of the heir of Barinkai in the estate reverses the usual provincial way of life of Hungarians. The noble Sandor, along with his friend and servant Stefan, helps everyone who asks him for help. He helps the lovers — Arsene and Ottokar, whom the domineering father seeks to separate, stands up for the gypsy camp and tries to defend his inheritance rights. But as a result, Sandor Barinkai and the gypsies are connected not only by the brotherhood, he falls in love with the beautiful Saffi, the daughter of the old gypsy Chipra. For the sake of his beloved girl, the hero is ready to sacrifice not only his title, but also his freedom.
In the end, the leader of the gypsy camp, Sandor Barinkai, young lovers Arsen and Ottokar, Mirabella and Stefan enter into an open confrontation with the pettiness, greed and hypocrisy of the imaginary defenders of traditions and morality in the person of Cornero and Zupan. And in the life of the reckless rake Stefan, very unexpected changes are taking place. He meets an attractive person — Mirabella, Arsena's governess and Zupan's housekeeper, who is not only able to appreciate his numerous and diverse talents, but is not going to miss the chance and arrange her female happiness.
The appearance of the governor, Count Omonai, in the Zupan estate resolves all the intricacies of incredible life situations that connected the heroes of this story. It turns out that Saffie is a rich heiress of a noble count's family, the commissioner of morality Cornero is not so moral at all, and Zupan is not such a usurper. Hungarians, as it turned out, do not interfere with Gypsies at all, and all lovers find hope for a happy future.

ALEXANDRE DUMAS: Strauss is a God who owns passions! Humanity should make a pilgrimage to him, as to the Pope in Rome, and kiss his feathers — these golden feathers!

EMILE ZOLA: Artists like Strauss have the best share in the world. Ah, if I could be born again, I would like to be an artist like Strauss, and not a writer at all.

NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: God's spark can also be in an operetta melody. Strauss has it to the highest degree.

FERENC LEGAR: The magic of his sounds will run out only when there is no more cheerfulness, when humanity has forgotten how to laugh, sing and dance.

The performance uses Hungarian folk and Gypsy music.
