Programme
Overview

A performance by the Polish countertenor who has burst onto the international scene like a meteorite.

The Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński has swiftly become one of the most vibrant performers on the international classical music scene, triumphing on stage, in concert and on recordings.

This singer of striking vocal beauty and audacious stage presence has burst onto the international lyric scene like a meteorite. Called to lead the new generation of countertenors, he is also a very charismatic artist and has thousands of followers on social networks, both those who revere him as a performer of Baroque opera and those who admire him for his other surprising facet, breakdancing.

Trained at the Juilliard School in New York, he has already recorded his first album of arias, Anima Sacra, which has achieved critical acclaim and won him the prestigious Opus Klassik award for solo vocal recording. He also won the Gramophone Award in 2019 in the category of Young Artist of the Year.

His debut at the Arriaga Theatre looks set to be an exciting one as he will perform a selection of pieces by Baroque composers such as Purcell and Handel, as well as Schubert and Polish composers, accompanied on piano by Michał Biel.

Programme: Lieder and songs by Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert, Georg Friedrich Händel, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Charles Naginski, Aaron Copland.

Arriaga Theater - Bilbao
Location   Arriaga Plaza, 1

The Arriaga antzokia in basque or Teatro Arriaga in Spanish is an opera house in Bilbao. It was built in Neo-baroque style by architect Joaquín Rucoba in 1890, the same architect that built the city hall. It is named after Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, known in his time as the “Spanish Mozart”. The theater was rebuilt in 1985 after severe flooding destroyed it in August 1983.
