The Arriaga antzokia in basque or Teatro Arriaga in Spanish is an opera house in Bilbao. It was built in Neo-baroque style by architect Joaquín Rucoba in 1890, the same architect that built the city hall. It is named after Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, known in his time as the “Spanish Mozart”. The theater was rebuilt in 1985 after severe flooding destroyed it in August 1983.

Contemporary dance, visual art and the music of Prokofiev combine to construct a monstrously beautiful ballet.
The Iceland Dance Company returns to Arriaga Theatre to perform such a charismatic title as Romeo ❤ Juliet. With Shakespeare’s play as a starting point, Romeo ❤ Juliet by Erna Ómarsdóttir and Halla Ólafsdóttir combines contemporary dance, visual art and Prokofiev’s music. The performance deconstructs the original story into a web of simultaneous narratives that fuses references from popular culture with the language of ballet. The result, as powerful as it is beautiful, is a monstruous nightmare; an abstract world replete with blood, love, ballet exorcism, fire, dance and death. Romeo ❤ Juliet slides through the sands of consciousness. Like a bloody river rising towards the sea.
Romeo ❤ Juliet, the well-known dance composition by Erna Ómarsdóttir and Halla Ólafsdóttir, was originally created in collaboration with the dancers of the Ballet of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Munich, and premiered in autumn 2018. Now, the work has been developed, adapted and re-created with the dancers of the Iceland Dance Company, whose virtuosity and strength is already familiar to Bilbao audiences.
