Born in St. Petersburg, Andrei Popov has been a soloist at the Mariinsky Theater since 2007. Among his extensive repertoire, Grishka Kuterma (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitue), Afanasy Ivanovich (The Fair of Sorochinsky), the Innocent (Boris Godunov), the Astrologer (The Golden Cockerel), Elisa Bomelius (The Tsar's Bride), Bobyl Bakula (The Snow Girl), Kochtchei the Immortal (title-role), Alexei (The Player), Truffaldino (The Love of the Three Oranges), The Shabby Balcon (Lady Macbeth of Mzensk), Dr. Cajus (Falstaff), Goro (Lady Butterfly), Pang (Turandot), Iopas (The Trojans), Gonzalve (The Spanish Hour), Don Basilio (The Marriage of Figaro), Monostatos (The Magic Flute), Mime (The Gold of the Rhine and Siegfried), Herod (Salome), Brighella and the Tanzmeister (Ariadne at Naxos), the Hunchback (The Woman without shadow), Laca (Jenůfa).
He has toured Boris Godunov, Prince Igor and The Nose at the Metropolitan Opera, and has played the District Inspector (Le Nez) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival and at the Rome Opera House, Chouiski ( Boris Godunov) at the Nice Opera House, Scribe (La Khovantchina), Chekalinski (The Queen of Spades) and Ierochka (Prince Igor) at the Amsterdam National Opera, Mime (Rhine Gold) at the Festival from Edinburgh and in concert version at the Philharmonie de Paris under the direction of Valery Gergiev, The Miserable Balder (Lady Macbeth of Mzensk) at the Salzburg Festival, Agrippa (The Angel of Fire) in Warsaw and at the Aix Festival -in Provence.
He received the Golden Mask for the roles of Burdyukov and Storchenko in Gogoliade and he created the title role of Rodion Chedrine's The Lefthander at the Mariinsky Theater in 2013.
