About

Graduated in philosophy in 1994, began his activity as a director by working on several short films including Notes for a phenomenology of the vision, which debuted at the International Festival of Young Cinema in Turin.

In 2004 he made his directorial debut with Idomeneo and since then his activity is split between theater and opera.

oncerning this last one, he dealt with many titles of the twentieth century: Benjamin Britten’s Curlew River, Bruno Maderna’s Satyricon, a triptych of works for the Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon composed by Paul Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna, Erwartung by Arnold Schönberg and Il dissoluto assolto by Azio Corghi based on the libretto written by José Saramago (world premiere).

The nineteenth-century’s opera titles include Macbeth, L’elisir d’amore

and Maria Stuarda.

In December 2006 he also directed Don Pasquale, conducted by Riccardo Muti (available on DVD) with whom he also worked in May 2008 for the staging of an opera by Giovanni Paisiello, Il Matrimonio inaspettato, for the Whitsun Festival in Salzburg.

Concerning the prose repertoire, his productions are characterized by a great interest in the tragic characters: starting from the Encomio di Elena an adaptation of the homonymous text of the sophist Gorgia da Lentini, The Trojan Women by Euripides, The tenth year from Euripides and Aeschylus, up to Electra by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The past few seasons have seen him involved in two successful productions: Mary Stuart by Friedrich von Schiller, Molly Sweeney by Brian Friel and The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

From December 2008 to May 2011 he was director of the Teatro Stabile of Naples, where, in addition to The Tempest, in February 2011 he staged Everything great in the Tempest, about the work of Martin Heidegger, the largest philosopher of the twentieth century.

In June 2011 he directed Manfred by G. G. Byron in its full theatrical edition, with music by Schumann for both Repertory Theatre and Teatro Regio in Turin under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda. For Teatro Stabile of Turin he staged Shakespeare’s Macbeth with which he toured in some major Italian Theaters in 2012 and 2013. Afterwards he directed Norma for Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in the Terme di Caracalla and staged in Modena a work inspired by Plato’s Symposium.

Among his recent and future engagements: Studi sul Simposio at Franco Parenti in Milan, the opening of the season in Sao Paulo with Il trovatore, Falstaff Teatro Stabile in Turin, the opening of the season at Fenice in Venice with Simon Boccanegra under the baton of Myung Whun Chung, Goyescas and Suor Angelica in Turin in co-production with Florence and Naples, Luisa Miller in Naples, Seneca’s Fedra in Modena, Reggio Emilia, Bologna and Torino, Simon Boccanegra in Genoa and in St. Petersburg.
