Overview

Located in a magnificent historic 18th-century building in the heart of St Petersburg, the Alexandrinsky Theatre presents Beauséjour as part of the internationally renowned Dance Open Festival — a production that turns time itself into a partner in dance.

Premiere in Russia

Beautiful is the time we live in — regardless of age. When energy, optimism and the desire to express oneself sweep away inner barriers in a dazzling fountain of emotion, we fall in love with the world again — and with those who seem to belong only to youth. In Beauséjour, choreographer Mourad Merzouki stages an азартный, high-spirited confrontation between generations: the young challenge the old, the old challenge the young. They mix, lift one another, form fleeting intergenerational pairs — just for a few steps of tango. The audience laughs, and beneath the pulsing rhythms a breeze of tender nostalgia drifts across the stage.

With astonishing dance technique and striking theatrical transformation, the performers — including artists who have appeared on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre and trained at the same prestigious academies — embrace an entirely new physical language. Set to an electrifying soundtrack by the tango re-inventors Müller & Makaroff, the production becomes both philosophical reflection and joyous spectacle.

As Baz’art writes, “Beauséjour is virtuoso, irresistibly alive, radiant with contagious energy — and simply unmissable.”

Alexandrinsky Theatre - Saint Petersburg
Location   Ostrovsky Square 6

Rising gracefully on Ostrovsky Square in the heart of Saint Petersburg, the Alexandrinsky Theatre is one of Russia’s oldest and most prestigious dramatic stages. Founded in 1756 by decree of Empress Elizabeth, it is regarded as the cradle of Russian professional theatre and a living monument to the country’s artistic heritage.

The theatre’s magnificent Empire-style building, designed by architect Carlo Rossi, is itself a masterpiece. Its grand colonnade and harmonious proportions reflect the elegance of imperial Saint Petersburg, while the richly adorned auditorium preserves the atmosphere of 19th-century theatrical splendor. Yet behind this historic façade beats a boldly contemporary artistic heart.

For more than two centuries, the Alexandrinsky stage has hosted the premieres of landmark works by Russian playwrights, including Gogol, Ostrovsky, and Turgenev. It has been home to legendary actors and visionary directors who shaped the evolution of Russian drama. Today, the theatre continues this tradition by combining classical repertoire with innovative productions, experimental staging, and international collaborations.

Under modern artistic leadership, the Alexandrinsky Theatre balances reverence for tradition with a search for new theatrical language. Audiences can experience everything from timeless Russian classics to daring contemporary interpretations, all performed by a distinguished ensemble known for its depth, precision, and emotional power.

A visit to the Alexandrinsky Theatre is more than an evening at the playhouse — it is an encounter with the history, architecture, and living spirit of Russian theatre.

Historic grandeur, artistic excellence, and fearless creativity — the Alexandrinsky Theatre remains a symbol of Saint Petersburg’s cultural brilliance.
