Normandy is a region in the north of France. On its coast are white chalk cliffs and beachheads from the Second World War, including Omaha Beach, the site of the famous landing of the Allied military forces. The rocky island of Mont Saint-Michel is located off the coast of the region, the top of which is crowned with the Gothic style abbey of the same name. In the city of Rouen, over which the Rouen Cathedral rises, Joan of Arc, a French commander and Catholic saint, was executed in 1431.
