Winter Theater

Winter Theater

Winter Theater is a theater in the Central District of the city of Sochi, Krasnodar Territory, Russia. It is an architectural monument of federal significance.

From September 1934 to November 11, 1937, according to the project of the architect K. N. Chernopyatov, the construction of the Sochi theater, which received the name "Winter", was carried out. The roof was originally covered with ceramic tiles, which were replaced with a red metal roof during the subsequent major renovations of the building.

Eighty-eight columns with a horizontal carrying part, encircling the building, create a Corinthian architectural composition.

The portico is crowned with a pediment on which three female figures are installed, personifying painting, architecture, and sculpture, created by the sculptor V. I. Mukhina.

The auditorium is designed for 946 seats. The hall is dominated by two colors - golden and white. The ceiling is decorated with a huge chandelier with crystal pendants, which contains more than 300 lamps. The stage is clearly visible from any place in the auditorium. Its portal is 16 m, depth - 18 m, height from the stage floor to the grate, from which the scenery descends - 25 m.

The auditorium is protected from the service premises by a fire-resistant iron curtain weighing 22 tons, which is located in the upper part of the stage during performances. The opening of the theater took place on May 15, 1938, with the opera "The Tsar's Bride" by N. Rimsky-Korsakov staged by the Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theater. K. S. Stanislavsky.

The building of the Winter Theater also houses the Sochi State Philharmonic Society, founded on January 4, 1968 - the oldest concert organization in the city. Now the Philharmonic employs about 10 creative groups, among them the Laureate of the All-Union Competition String Quartet named after Rachmaninov, the orchestra of Russian folk instruments "Russian Souvenir" under the direction of the Honored Artist of Russia V. I. Abrashkin, the Cossack song ensemble "Lyubo", the quartet "Sochi-Surprise ".
