Gianluca Capuano studied the organ, composition and conducting at the Conservatory in his home town of Milan and went on to specialize in early music at the city’s Scuola Civica. He also graduated in theoretical philosophy from the University of Milan. He has appeared as a soloist and as a conductor throughout Europe, the USA, Russia and Japan, collaborating with artists such as Michael Chance, Emma Kirkby, Cecilia Bartoli, Max Emanuel Cencic, Philippe Jaroussky, Diego Fasolis and Lorenzo and Vittorio Ghielmi and also with many well-known choirs and orchestras. In February 2019 he was appointed principal conductor of Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco.
In 2005 Gianluca Capuano founded Il canto di Orfeo, a vocal and instrumental ensemble with which he has performed a wide range of Baroque works. With his vocal ensemble he has also taken part in performances of Raskatov’s A Dog’s Heart and Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten at La Scala, Milan.
Following successful performances of Vinci’s Artaserse and Hasse’s Leucippo for the Cologne Opera, Handel’s Orlando at the Dresden State Opera and Haydn’s Orlando paladino at the Zurich Opera, he came to international attention in August 2016 when he stepped in at short notice to conduct Norma with Cecilia Bartoli at the opening of the Edinburgh Festival. In addition to further performances of Norma, he also conducted a European tour of La Cenerentola with Les Musiciens du Prince- Monaco at Cecilia Bartoli’s invitation, including a run of performances at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. It was with this orchestra that he made his Salzburg debut in Ariodante and in a concert performance of La donna del lago at the 2017 Whitsun Festival.
Other recent engagements have included Vivaldi’s Catone in Utica, Gassmann’s Gli uccellatori and Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto for the Cologne Opera, Così fan tutte in a production for OperaLombardia, Idomeneo at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, La clemenza di Tito in Karlsruhe, L’incoronazione di Poppea in Nantes, Donizetti’s Pigmalione in a double bill with Mayr’s Che originali! at the Donizetti Opera Festival in Bergamo, Spontini’s Le metamorfosi di Pasquale at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and La finta giardiniera in Winterthur. During the 2018/19 season he conducts La finta giardiniera at the Zurich Opera, the Christmas Oratorio at the Hamburg State Opera, Ariodante in Monte Carlo, Alcina at the Salzburg Festival, Orfeo ed Euridice at the Rome Opera, Il matrimonio segreto at the Dutch National Opera and Guillaume Tell in Monte Carlo and at the Chorégies d’Orange.
Future projects include Il barbiere di Siviglia in Palermo, Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno in Cologne, La Cenerentola und Iphigénie en Tauride in Zurich, Alcina at the Glyndebourne Festival and Semele and Ariodante at La Scala.
On the concert platform Gianluca Capuano has recently appeared with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, I Pomeriggi Musicali, the Kiel Philharmonic, the Orchestre national de Montpellier and Concerto Köln.
His most recent CD release is an album featuring Javier Camarena and Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco and devoted to the legendary tenor Manuel García.
