From January to December 2019, we’ll be celebrating Chetham’s – its people, its stories, and its next fifty years.

About the Chetham`s at 50

In September 1969, a small musical revolution took place. A new intake of students was admitted to Chetham’s by musical audition, laying the foundations for a specialist music school in Manchester. Many of them, for the first time in 300 years, were girls.

Fifty years later, former Chetham’s students fill concert halls across the world – as performers, as influencers, and as audiences. Over half a century, that small revolution has rippled across the musical landscape, creating a step change in music education, accessibility and ideals.

Manchester Vocal Weekend A weekend of lieder and opera arias, with Marcus Farnsworth, Ruby Hughes and Joseph Middleton

This Woman’s Work A celebration of women composers

200 years since Clara Schumann’s birth
50 years since the first girls joined Chetham’s

Including the world premiere of a new work by Emma-Ruth Richards, specially commissioned for International Women’s Day 2019; and a discussion with Nicola LeFanu on fifty years of progress for women in music

Mahler: Symphony No. 8 Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra and Chorus are joined by guest choirs, soloists and instrumentalists for a triumphant performance of Mahler’s unsurpassable ‘Symphony of a Thousand’, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 from Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall
