Calixto Bieito Tickets

Born in Mirando de Ebro (Burgos), Calixto Bieito is a former director of the Teatre Romea de Barcelona, of the International Arts Festival in Castilla y Léon and of the Barcelona International Teatre (Bit)

He made his incursion into the world of opera in 1996 when he directed the operetta La Verbena de la Paloma in Barcelona, a first experience which was quickly followed by Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire at the Teatre Lliure, Carmen at the Peralada Festival, Così fan tutte with Welsh National Opera, Un ballo in maschera and Carmen at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, The Threepenny Operaby Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht at the Grec Festival in Barcelona. 
His productions of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the Salzburg Festival in 2001, Don Giovanni in Hanover, at English National Opera and at the Liceu in Barcelona (2002) as well as Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Komsche Oper in Berlin (2004) established his reputation as one of the most controversial but also among the most exciting directors of his generation. 
He has since worked at all the major European opera houses and has directed Il Trovatore, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, La Traviata and Wozzeck in Hanover; Jenůfa, La Fanciulla del West, The Flying Dutchman, Parsifal, Il Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno, Platée and The Fairy Queen at the Stuttgart Staatstheater; Madame Butterfly, Armide, Der Freischütz, Dialogues des carmélites, Gianni Schicchi, Bluebeard’s Castle at the Komische Oper; Elektra in Freiburg, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Tannhäuser at Flandres Opera; Don Carlo, Lulu, From the House of the Dead, Aïda, Carmen, the War Requiem and Così fan tutte in Basel; Die Soldaten in Zurich, The Tales of Hoffmann and Carmen in Oslo and Fidelio and Boris Godunov at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. 
His production of La Forza del destino for English National Opera (2015) will be performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 2017 and in Toronto in 2020. He also works in theatre: Hamlet, La Celestina and Platform based on the work by Houellebeck at the Edinburgh Festival; Aeschylus’ The Persians at the Merida Festival, Brand by Ibsen and Voices by Stemmers at the Bergen Festival. 
He is invited regularly to the Mannheim National Theatre, the Residenztheater in Munich and the National Theatre of Oslo. In 2009 in Basel, he was awarded the European “pro cultura” prize by the European Cultural Foundation.
