About

Italian lighting designer Alessandro Carletti made his Royal Opera debut in 2013 on Nabucco, directed by Daniele Abbado. He has since worked on Guillaume Tell, directed by Damiano Michieletto, for which he won a 2015 Knight of Illumination Award, and the Olivier Award-winning Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci, also directed by Michieletto.

Carletti was born in Rome and studied photography and painting through which he discovered his passion for lighting design. He went on to work at the Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro, and now works widely in opera and theatre. His many collaborations with Michieletto include Samson et Dalila (Paris Opéra), Cendrillon (Komische Oper Berlin), Jackie O (Lugo), Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Teatro di San Carlo, Naples), La donna del lagoLa scala di seta and Sigismondo (Rossini Opera Festival), L’elisir d’amore (Valencia), The Greek Passion (Palermo), Così fan tutte (New National Theatre, Tokyo), Il viaggio a Reims and Rigoletto (Dutch National Opera), Die Zauberflöte(Florence) and Ramón del Valle-Inclán’s play Divine parole (Piccolo Teatro, Milan). He regularly works with directors including Abbado, Henning Brockhaus, Pippo Delbono, Yannis Kokkos, Francesco Micheli and Franco Ripa di Meana.
